Loss of the sense of smell. It may be: 1) essential or true, due to lesion of the olfactory nerve; 2) mechanical or respiratory, due to obstruction of the nasal fossae; 3) reflex, due to disease in some other part or organ; or 4) functional, without any apparent causal lesion.
