An acute or chronic inflammation of the middle ear caused by a reduction in pressure in the tympanic cavity relative to ambient pressure, secondary to eustachian tube obstruction; often occurs on descent from high altitude. Syn: aviation otitis, aviator’s ear, barotitis media.
