A genus of bacteria (order Mycoplasmatales) that have characteristics identical to those of the species in the genus Mycoplasma, with the exception that the acholeplasmas do not require sterol for growth; saprophytic and parasitic species occur. The type species is Acholeplasma laidlawii.
